Business & Marketing Education: Online Master’s Degree

Teaching certification

The online business and marketing education degree is designed for individuals who already hold an initial secondary education certification. This program does not provide all of the necessary components to meet initial teacher certification requirements.  If you are seeking initial teacher certification for Missouri, please contact the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE).

This online master’s program is designed primarily for teachers who want to:

  • Earn a master's degree in learning and instruction
  • Enhance their knowledge of business and marketing education concepts
  • Gain additional certification in business and/or marketing education

Additional certification

Applicants who hold an initial certification in another secondary education subject area and are seeking additional certification in business and/or marketing education should consult the certification requirements page at the DESE website to determine if all requirements will be met through a combination of the online master’s degree program of study and the applicant’s completed undergraduate course work.

The focus area courses in the program of study address most of the secondary methods and techniques competencies for business and marketing education.  DESE also requires that individuals posses at least two years (4000 hours) of occupational experience in a business or marketing-related field for certification in business and marketing education.
While the University of Missouri-Columbia offers courses that address the competencies for business and marketing education certification, it does not grant certification.  Missouri teaching certifications may only be issued by DESE.

Temporary authorization certification

Focus area coursework for the online M.Ed. program of study covers most of the secondary methods and techniques competencies for business and marketing education Temporary Authorization Certification.  Additional coursework and professional experience may be required.  Students should consult the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education for details regarding Temporary Authorization Certification requirements.

Non-Missouri students

Please contact the certification agency for the state in which you are seeking teacher certification.  The University of Missouri-Columbia cannot sign out-of-state certification forms. The University can only verify course work taken at this institution. For verification of course work completed, you may request an official transcript through the University of Missouri Office of the Registrar.
