Career and technical education degree details

This online master of education degree in career and technical education with a business and marketing education emphasis is a flexible 33-hour program that is based on the traditional on-campus degree program, but which can be earned completely online. Students are able to customize the program of study to address specific professional goals. The entire degree program can be completed from a distance; however, students who are able to travel to Columbia for courses offered only on the MU campus have even more options.

This program does not lead to initial teacher certification. Students should consult the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education for details regarding requirements for teacher certification.

Core requirements

The College of Education requires all graduate students to take a research course. In addition, students must take six credit hours of course work in the social, historical or psychological foundations of education.

Emphasis area course work

Students are required to take 12 credit hours of course work in career and technical education and/or business and marketing education. In addition to required courses in curriculum design, student assessment and administration of career and technical education programs, students may choose a course from several options a course that aligns with their professional goals.

The emphasis area courses require students to engage in extensive reading, writing and online discussion (NOT real-time chat room discussion), as well as provide practical strategies and techniques to implement in the classroom. These courses are designed to enhance the process of teaching and learning in the high school or post-secondary classroom, or in private industry training and development.

Professional elective course work

With consultation and approval by the program adviser, students will select 12 credit hours of graduate-level course work in the one or more areas of professional interest. Intended to allow for customization of a student’s program of study, professional electives can be online or on-campus courses (or a combination of both). Students may transfer a maximum of 6 credit hours from another institution, with approval from the advisor, the LTC Director of Graduate Studies and the Graduate School.

Capstone comprehensive project

Master of education candidates in the career and technical education program must compile a portfolio containing material developed throughout the program of study and, at the end of the degree program, complete a capstone project comprising a summation of all course work. The portfolio should contain at least one work sample (completed project, paper, lesson plan etc.) from EACH class that a student completes. The candidate must be enrolled at the University during the semester in which the master's capstone project is completed. Detailed information about the portfolio and capstone project will be provided to applicants who have been accepted into the program after the start of course work.

Students may start the program as either post-baccalaureate (formerly non-degree-seeking) or degree-seeking.
