Learning and instruction degree details

This online master of education degree in learning and instruction with a business and marketing education focus is an innovative 33-hour program that is delivered completely online. Students will take a set of courses designed to enhance foundational knowledge and skills in professional educators, as well as courses focused on business and marketing education.

This program does not lead to initial teacher certification. Students should consult the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education for details regarding requirements for teacher certification.

Business and marketing education focus courses

The 12-hour business and marketing education focus area includes course work applicable to all career and technical education disciplines, as well as courses specific to business and marketing education. The focus area will provide students with skills and knowledge applicable to both the business classroom and the marketing classroom. Individuals who already have a background in the discipline will be able to improve their knowledge and practice of business and marketing education concepts while obtaining an advanced degree. The focus area courses require students to engage in extensive reading, writing and online discussion (NOT real-time chat room discussion), as well as providing practical strategies and techniques to implement in the classroom.

Core requirement course work

The 21 hours of core course work in this program includes study in learning theory, instructional technology, instructional leadership, instructional strategies, measurement and assessment, and research. These courses are designed to enhance the process of teaching and learning in the middle and high school classroom.

Capstone comprehensive project

Master of education candidates must compile a portfolio containing material developed throughout the program of study and complete, at the end of the degree program, a capstone project comprising a summation of all course work. The portfolio should contain at least one work sample (completed project, paper, lesson plan etc.) from EACH class that a student completes. The candidate must be enrolled at the University during the semester in which the master's capstone project is completed. Detailed information about the portfolio and capstone project will be provided to applicants who have been accepted into the program after the start of course work.

Students may start the program as either post-baccalaureate (formerly non-degree-seeking) or degree-seeking.
