Journalism Education: Online Master’s Degree

Degree details

Missouri educators pursue the master’s degree and complete courses that lead to Missouri journalism education certification, or they may choose just to complete the certification courses without obtaining a master’s degree.

Students pursuing the master’s degree complete 36 hours of course work offered through both the School of Journalism and the College of Education. For Missouri residents, the degree adds three additional credit hours beyond the 33-hour Missouri certification requirement in journalism education. The degree is a master of education in curriculum and instruction with an emphasis in English education and a focus in journalism education.

Those intending to pursue the degree may take up to 12 credit hours as a post-baccalaureate (or non-degree-seeking) student before they are accepted into the degree program.

Educators from other states enroll in the master’s program as a convenient way to obtain a master’s degree in their content area and to further their experience in the field of journalism education.

Some teachers who reside outside Missouri apply Mizzou course work toward certification in other states. To ensure that course work is applicable, educators interested in pursuing certification in another state should check with their state certification body before enrolling. Individuals who have obtained approval from other states may take any of the journalism education courses as a post-baccalaureate (or non-degree-seeking) student, or they may choose to pursue the degree as well.

All course work in the program is online, yet interactive, with student and faculty discussion. Courses are taught by faculty from both journalism and education departments.

Students may start the program as either post-baccalaureate (formerly non-degree-seeking) or degree-seeking.
