Machinery and Equipment Valuation Courses Online

These online joint offerings by the University of Missouri-Columbia and the American Society of Appraisers (ASA) provide machinery and equipment valuation education over the Internet. Courses address the machinery and equipment valuation industry and methods, and provide access to students who are unable to participate in a regular classroom setting. These courses are requisites to achieve a designation with the American Society of Appraisers.

What is machinery and equipment appraisal?

The Machinery and Technical Specialties (MTS) discipline encompasses appraisers who appraise machinery, equipment, industrial entities, high-tech equipment, agricultural chattels, aircraft, ships, boats, oil, gas and other mineral reserves, and public utilities. This is a unique group of appraisers who, through specialized education and experience, often work in conjunction with other disciplines, especially business valuation and real property appraisers.

MTS appraisers perform appraisals utilizing the three recognized approaches to value: cost, market and income. Within the MTS general discipline are individual appraisers who have gained further expertise in valuing unique industrial properties and equipment. MTS appraisers often have to possess a working knowledge of how to value intangible and real property.

MTS appraisals are used by bankers, lessors, property owners, attorneys, insurance companies, taxing authorities, governmental agencies and anyone else needing to know the value of property. The purposes of the appraisals vary as the needs dictate.

These appraisers will perform valuations for ad valorem tax, potential sale or purchase, dissolution of a company or partnership, lease financing, normal useful life studies, allocation of purchase price, gift tax, inheritance tax and insurance purposes, to name just a few.

The courses currently offered in the MTS discipline are geared specifically to machinery and equipment appraisers and lead to that designation.
