Online Commencement Speech

As the son of a Mizzou graduate, I can tell you that the University of Missouri has always been an important part of my life. And, as a professional racecar driver, I know how hard you have to work to be a winner. That’s why I’m proud to be speaking to an entire group of winners – Mizzou’s online degree graduates.
There are hundreds of you all over the country who completed your MU degrees online this semester. The faculty and staff at the University obviously couldn’t bring all of you together for a regular ceremony, so they are doing the next best thing, which is bringing graduation to you. And … they’re doing it the same way you earned your degree.
You’ve put in lots of time and effort preparing for this big day, and now all your hard work is paying off. You’ve been pioneers, part of the first generation of students to learn this way. You’ve discovered that studying from a distance isn’t any easier than learning in a classroom. Sometimes it’s even more challenging. I can vouch for that because I’ve been there myself, having taken an online class from MU. And just like you, I plan to go back to school and complete my degree online from Mizzou.
As adults, we have our careers to focus on, and sometimes family and other interests. That’s where the advantages of online learning come into play. You were able to accomplish a lot in terms of working on your courses. Yet, you could still have a life and enjoy those other priorities because you were the one who determined when and where to study.
You found a way to make your education work because you knew it was an important goal to achieve. Earning a degree enhances your success and your attitude, both professionally and personally. No matter what age you are and no matter what life brings, I believe you should always keep learning. It’s never too late to go back to school, and you are an example of how this can be done.
I hope your degree will take you to new levels of satisfaction in your career and in your personal life, and that you will share your knowledge and your gifts with others who can benefit from them.
You are an inspiration to others, just as you are to me. I hope you consider your graduation as your trip to victory lane.
Congratulations, Mizzou graduates!
